Grade 4 students gained a new sense of direction thanks to Mr. Omai!

Grade 4 students gained a new sense of direction thanks to Mr. Omai! He is one of the Master Navigators of the Hokulea, “Star of Joy,”  the famous double-hulled voyaging canoe of Hawaii, which is a symbol of cultural renewal and oceanic exploration.

In addition to understanding the ocean swells, sun, moon, stars, seabirds, and sea life, he explained the importance of math and science as essential skills to being a good navigator.

Mr. Omai stated that the Voyaging Society collaborated with Mau Piailug, a traditional navigator from a small island called Satawal, in Micronesia, to teach them about traditional navigation. Preserving this ancient form of navigation and perpetuating it for future generations.

MAHALO, Mr. Omai, for sharing your 35 years of experience and wisdom with our Grade 4 students and inspiring them to broaden their horizons.
