The Hanalani `ohana is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Mr. S, Nathan Sugimoto. He became unexpectedly ill and passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024. 

Nathan served as the Fine Arts department head and teacher. He enthusiastically and joyfully taught Lower School (Elementary) and Upper School (Intermediate and High School) Music for 33 years.  Elementary students had fun learning the recorder and ukulele.  In the early years, he started a high school choir and then started the band program. He loved teaching music and introducing and inspiring students to the wonders of music. Mr. S loved his students and loved the Lord. 

 

We are thankful the Lord blessed our school with an incredible person who devoted his talents to bless our Hanalani `ohana and others. Beyond the classroom, Mr. S organized or assisted in leading the Lower School Christmas programs, Upper School Christmas Concert, Evening of the Arts, Lei Day Program, Opening and Closing Convocation, and other programs in which he directed music. If he wasn’t directing music for an event, he would be behind the scenes setting up the extended staging and working at the sound and lighting boards.

 

Fine Arts trips were highlights for Mr. S. Every other year the band, choir, and orchestra students traveled to destinations such as Disneyland in California or Florida, Knotts Berry Farm, and Universal Studios. The most recent trip was to New York City, with 60-plus students, where they watched a Broadway production and then flew down to Florida.  Mr. S always returned with a big smile and fond memories to share. When he spoke about the trip you heard in his voice the joy of seeing the students perform at premiere venues, receive amazing workshop experiences from working professionals, and seeing new sites. There was never a complaint, just the fun stories, and distinct laughter we will all love.

Nathan was a member of Hanalani Schools’ Class of 1985.

Mr. S will truly be missed by all; however, we are thankful to know that he is now singing and making music before the Lord.
