College and Academic Services: Supporting Student's College Goals
In recent years, standardized testing has slowly been taken off the list of mandatory admissions requirements for college campuses. Unlike previous years, colleges are taking a more holistic approach to the application review process. Personal statements, the rigor of courses taken, and activities both on and off campus are all used to determine college admissions.
Hanalani Schools’ Upper School program has been working hard to implement strategies to help our students develop a strong college application. Dual enrollment, advanced placement (AP), and co-curricular programs offered provide students not only with great learning opportunities but also with the chance to build an impressive list for their college applications.
- Prep classes held during flex period allow students the opportunity to dig deeper into the college planning process. Starting sophomore year, students meet one-on-one with their college and academic counselor to begin the conversation of course selection and college exploration. This year is also a great time for students to meet with the dozens of college admissions representatives who visit campus to learn more about their options.
- College Prep class during junior year, we distribute a College Planner as a tool for students and their families to use in preparation for the year ahead. In senior year, students often visit the College and Academic Services (CAS) Office to review their personal statements and essays, review their admissions applications, and apply for scholarships.
- Our College and Academics Office has Career Pathways set up for high school students who have a career in mind. These course pathways help students take the necessary courses to prepare them for a rigorous college curriculum.
An Expanding Dual Enrollment Program
In the summer of 2021, Hanalani Schools offered its first-ever dual enrollment course with Hawaii Pacific University. This school year, we expanded our partnerships to include Grand Canyon University, offering even more course selections. Behavioral Health Science, Digital Design, and Sports and Entertainment are a few subjects students can choose from. Juniors and seniors with a 3.5 grade point average or higher, are invited to earn college credits while continuing to earn the high school credits needed for graduation.
Benefits of Dual Enrollment
Students who take dual enrollment courses get a head start on their college curriculum and can use the time saved to add a second major or focus on internship opportunities later in their college career. Dual enrollment courses can help offset the rising cost of college tuition. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a single course, Hanalani students get a discounted rate and save more than 90 percent in tuition costs. Since 2021, more than 50 dual enrollment courses have been taken and the average grade our students receive is 95%.
While most students opt for an online course, those who prefer the structure of an in-person setting can make the drive to Hawaii Pacific University’s Downtown campus.
Nicole Robles '24 explains, “The face-to-face interaction with my professor made it easier to ask questions and allowed me to get a glimpse of what college will be like. I feel more prepared for what to expect next year by participating in the dual enrollment program.”
