Elementary

Hanalani Schools Elementary program is composed of grades 1st through 6th. Lower elementary, 1st through 3rd, places an emphasis on reading and writing skills, setting the groundwork for a successful student career. Upper elementary, 4th through 6th, continues building this groundwork by focusing on writing skills and mathematics. Topical platforms such as Hawaii’s history or foreign nations are used in an interdisciplinary way to teach the expression and communication of ideas while covering subject-related information. Students exit 6th grade with the tools needed to progress to higher levels of learning, providing an easy transition into the 7th grade.

Learning is based on existing course materials, but is teacher supplemented, giving relevance and life to the information. The daily classroom experience is a unique one designed by the teacher specifically for the students. While elementary students will spend the majority of their day with their designated teacher, many non-core subjects are taught by specialty teachers in specialty facilities. Physical education, computers, and music are examples of such specialty courses.

Parent-school communication is key for the success of any student. Report cards and mid-quarter reports are issued quarterly. Monthly newsletters and quarterly school newsletters give parents insight to what is happening on campus and a chance to see photos of students engaged in activities. Parents may also access grades online.

• Students wear school uniforms. Optionally, students may wear aloha wear on Fridays to promote island culture.
• Breakfast and lunch may be purchased daily.
• An on-campus library is available for students to study in during and after school. The library includes computers for research or writing.
• Opportunities to apply students’ acquired music and speaking skills are provided through the Christmas and Lei Day productions.
• Interscholastic volleyball and basketball programs are available for 5th and 6th grade students, competing in the Lutheran Sports League.
• Early drop-off (6:30 a.m.) and late pick-up (5:30 p.m.) is available at additional cost. Please see Before- or After-School Care on the tuition pricing schedule for more information and pricing.
• Additional after-school classes are available, including Japanese and piano lessons.

Our six-week Ka Imi Loa summer program integrates learning with a lot of fun! Ka Imi Loa benefits returning students as it reinforces the skills acquired over the school year. Our program also assists first-time students in learning school routines and boosts skills needed to enter the next grade level in the coming school year.
